Chapter Five
Some Christmas Kindness

The temperature was beginning to drop  ...rapidly.

Inside the damaged hover car, Keith sat quietly... shivering... his teeth chattering together, as he thought to himself that perhaps it might have been better to try and hike it back to the village he had just come from.

It might have taken him an hour or so, but at least, by now, he would have found a nice warm place to stay and wait out the storm.

Now...it was too late.

He would certainly freeze before he could reach the village.  The cold rushed and swirled around the car with a gale force that sent shivers down Keith's spine even to hear it.

All he could do now was sit and wait... hoping someone would find him.

"Some Christmas Eve this is turning out to be," Keith mumbled to himself, his teeth chattering together even faster than before.   "I'm not even going to get to see the kids..."

Keith pulled up his coat collar to his chin, and wrapped his arms around his body as tightly as he could, desperately attempting to retain what little body heat he had remaining.

And now...he was fighting a sleepy sort of feeling that was beginning to come over him.  The bump on his forehead...  he must have received a mild concussion from the impact that the hover car had made with the tree.

And now, the very dull throbbing pain he was feeling was beginning to lull him to sleep.

He could feel his eyes beginning to droop. But if he fell asleep, as his body wanted him to, he knew he'd never wake up again.

Keith began to fight the impulse...

He screamed loudly at himself, started moving around a bit in the operator's seat. But...nothing he seemed to do was helping.

Meanwhile, outside, the snow was beginning to accumulate on the car, making it more difficult for the hover vehicle to be detected.   It had lightly covered the front viewing window.

As the snow continued to come down on the outside of the hover car, it produced a sort of hypnotizing affect.

Finally, after several minutes of staring at it, the impulse to sleep became strong then his will to live and he started to close his eyes.

Keith woke up to the sound of someone banging vigorously on the hatch window. The sound stunned him momentarily, and he struggled to wake up enough to see who was pounding on the window.

"Lance?" he thought groggily. "Did he find me already?"

He turned his head and saw an older gentleman, dressed from head to toe in winter gear.  The hood of the man's coat was covered with snow.

It was then that Keith had noticed that the front window was now completely covered in the snow.

"Whoa, how long did I doze off for?" he thought, still trying to shake the cobwebs from his mind.

"Hello!" the older man shouted through the window from the outside. "Are you alright in there, young man?"

Somewhat disoriented, Keith opened up the car hatch, and snow began falling into the car.  He stuck his head out of the door, and the first thing that greeted him was the bitter wind on his face.

Keith squinted as he looked up at the older gentleman.

"Hey!" the man said.  "I saw your car in the tree! Thought you could use some help!"

"Yeah..." Keith said, still a bit groggy.

The man shook his head with a frown.  "Listen here, you can't stay out here all night!  You'll freeze!   Come on, I'll take you to my place."

The Voltron Commander looked at the older man. "Your place?" he said.  "Where's 'your place'?"

The man pointed off toward a nearby wooded area. "Just over there... beyond the trees.  It's a quick five-minute walk from here.  I have a nice, warm log cabin, just waiting for you!"

"But...my friends," Keith began to say as his eyes caught sight of his damaged wrist COM that he had tossed on the floor earlier.  "They're probably out looking for me..."

"If they are, they won't find you in all of this." the man said, pointing to the sky. "The snow is coming down so hard, you'll be hard to spot."

"My friends will find me." Keith said confidently.

"Not likely in this mess, young fella." The man replied. "They'd have an easier time finding a needle in a haystack!"

"But, I've got to find someway to let them know I'm alright." Keith insisted.  "And they sure won't find me if I wander off somewhere..."

"They'll find you... don't worry." The man replied. "Come on. I'm not leaving you here. You're coming with me."

Keith hesitated, then reluctantly nodded his head yes. He got out of the car and closed the hatch door.

The whistling wind whipped around Keith with a bitter fury.  His shoulder-length black hair began to mercilessly whip at his face.  The man grabbed him under the arm and began walking toward the woods, with Keith in tow.

Red Lion had made yet another sweep of the forest area, now covered in snow. Lance checked his sensors for any sign of the hover car that Keith was in.

A message came in on the COM...

It was Allura's voice...

"Any sign of him yet?" she asked, her voice clearly echoing tones of concern.

Lance sighed. "Nothing yet, Princess."

"He must be somewhere out there!" she replied.  "Keep looking for him!"

"We will, Princess." Lance replied.  "Are the children there yet?"

"They're just arriving now." Allura's voice echoed.

"Okay, you take care of them. We'll take care of finding Keith!"  Lance replied to her.

"Some of the children are commenting on how cold it is out there..."  she replied.

"Yeah, they're right," Lance agreed.  "My sensors are showing near zero wind chills.  But I'm sure wherever Keith is, he's warm and safe.  Go and take care of the kids, Princess. We'll keep looking out here."

"Where could he be?" Allura questioned out loud.

"I wish I knew, Allura." Lance replied. "I wish I knew..."
