Operation: Save the Princess
Everyone worked hard at the plan to return Keith to the past. Pidge worked on the calculations needed to send Keith to the day before the accident. Lance and Hunk fitted the Black Lion with a special protective shield, to protect Keith from the sun's deadly affects.
Keith, in the meantime, went back to the crypt one last time...to see Allura.
"Princess." Keith said as he looked at her before covering the coffin back up. "I promised your father that I would give my life for you. I'm going back in time to save you. I know you can't hear me, but if you could I'd want you to know that I won't fail you this time. I swear on my life, Allura. I won't give up." As he finished, he crossed his right arm in front of his chest. "I... I love you, Princess. I only wish you knew."
Keith leaned in and closed his eyes as he pressed his lips against her cheek, kissing her lifeless form. He winced as he pulled away, slowly. She was cold and hard. Her skin felt unreal, and the obnoxious smell of embalming fluid radiated from her. He couldn't stand it. The smell alone made him want to vomit, not to mention the morbid thought of kissing a dead person. It was like kissing a clay figure. There was no life, no warmth, and no love. She was an empty shell. He glanced at the bouquet of roses beside her. They too, were now dead.
"Goodbye, Allura. I'll see you very soon." Keith said as he wiped the tears from his eyes, placing his hand on her cold hands that were crossed in front of her.
He pushed the cover back over the coffin until it slipped into place with a loud thud. Keith took several deep breaths, fighting back the tears. He then turned and walked out of the crypt and sealed it again. As he closed the crypt door, and turned to walk away, he thought he heard something moving just around the corner in the corridor...but after a few moments of careful listening, he decided it was merely his nerves again. He let it go at that.
"This has got to work" he thought as he was leaving. "It just has to!"
Keith took one more look at the crypt, then turned and walked away. The 'noise' that Keith had thought he heard, belonged to someone who had been spying on his every move. The intruder, releasing that the Voltron Commander was leaving, scurried away as well.
When Keith returned to the Castle, all was ready. Lance and Coran finished their part of the operation. Hunk entered the control room.
"Where did Pidge go to?" Lance asked, obviously annoyed. "He's suppose to be done by now."
"Not to worry, Lance, " Hunk replied, giving his anxious teammate the 'ok' sign with his fingers. "Pidge was just finishing up loading some last minute stuff into Black Lion's motherboard. He said its something very important to the operation, and he'd thank himself later that he did it."
"What sort of stuff?" Lance further questioned.
"Search me, Lance." Hunk replied, shrugging his shoulders. "All I know, is that he said it would be very important for the operation."
Before anyone thought to question further what it was that was so important, Pidge ran into the control room, a bit out of breath. He had a micro disk in his hand.
"Well Keith," said Pidge. "This is it. All the information you need to get back is on this disc. All you need to do is insert it into Black Lion's digital disc drive. It will do the rest. It'll feed the lion with all the information it needs to take you precisely back to the evening before the cloud phenomenon appears."
"Great job! Thanks Pidge. I know it'll work." Keith said with a smile, taking the disc.
"Commander" Pidge hesitated. "I thought I'd bring this up to you. I don't know how time travel works, and I don't like this whole idea at all. But I thought, maybe you ought to go prepared for the unexpected."
"Like what?" Keith asked.
"Well, what if you get back there, and you don't remember any of this? Shouldn't you write yourself a reminder or something? You know, just in case you have to remind yourself of this whole thing."
"I don't' think so." Keith said, shaking his head no. "King Alfor said I'll be the only one who knows what's going on."
"Yeah, but HOW do you know you'll know what's going on? How are you supposed to remember? Are you just gonna remember right off?" Pidge asked.
"According to King Alfor, I will be the only one who knows anything. I have to take care not to tell anyone about it. So I guess I will know right away." Keith said.
"Well, I guess so." Pidge said. "I just don't like this. You're not even sure how this is going to end up. What if its destiny that Allura has to die? Wouldn't you be changing the time line?"
"It wasn't her destiny to die that day! I made some critical errors in command judgement that I don't intend to repeat!" Keith fired off at Pidge. Then he softened his tone. "Besides, as long as no one knows anything about this, it won't matter."
"Yeah, but you'll know! So I guess it's already changed." Pidge said. "That means that if you do this, and it turns out okay, then you still can't tell anyone. You'll have to live with this forever, Keith. You can't tell anyone for the rest of your life."
"Yeah, but at least I'll...uh ...I mean, we'll...have Allura back with us. Alive." Keith said. He felt a slight blush coming over him. He was still guarding his secret love.
"Don't hide from me, Commander. I know how you feel. We all do. You wouldn't be trying to do this if you didn't feel something for her." Pidge whispered with a wink.
"Uh, yeah. Right." Keith said, embarrassed now. "Well, time to go." He quickly changed the subject.
Pidge extended his hand to Keith. "Good Luck, Commander."
"Thanks Pidge." Keith smiled back, warmed by his sincerity.
Keith and Pidge shook hands. Afterward, Keith turned and walked to the passageway that leads to the shuttle of Black Lion. The disc was in his hand. When he reached the shuttle bay, Lance, Hunk and Coran were standing there, waiting for him.
"Good luck, you sorry sucker!" Lance said and gave Keith a friendly hug. "Do me a favor. Don't go and get yourself killed, amigo. Leave that for me for letting you talk me into helping you go through with this mission!"
"Thanks, Lance. I'll be okay. Trust me." Keith said with a wink. "I have to do this. I have to at least try. Even if it does mean my life. I can't live with myself this way, Lance. I think you know that."
"Yeah, I know. Just be careful, Keith." Lance said, suddenly grabbing his friend and hugging him again, as if it were the last time. Keith was not use to such show of affection from Lance, but slowly returned the hug.
Hunk was next. He reached over and grabbed Keith to hug him tightly too.
"Please be careful. We want to see you again!" Hunk said, tears in his eyes.
"Like I told Lance, I'll be okay, big guy." Keith said as he gave his friend a pat on the back.
Coran was last to pass on his well wishes. He smiled at Keith. It was a special smile that Coran didn't usually give. He was a very serious person. He knew what Keith was attempting would be for the greater good of Arus. But he too, was very uneasy about the whole thing. He wasn't sure that Keith truly knew what he was doing.
"Good luck, Commander Keith." Coran said with a handshake. "Arus salutes you!"
"Thanks Coran. I won't let you or Arus down." Keith replied, throwing a military salute of his own to the Chief Magistrate.
"I know that. You had better get going now." Coran said. "The Princess awaits you in the past."
"Yeah, I'm on my way." Keith replied, fondly smiling at the thought of seeing her again. He felt like he did when he was a kid, taking a big trip. He was full of anticipation.
Keith started to go to the shuttle entrance. He turned and looked behind him. There they all wereLance, Pidge, Hunk, and Coran. All of them were staring at him as if this was the last time they would see each other. Maybe it was. No one really knew if this would actually work. It was based on Pidge's calculations. No one knew if it would really take him back to the past or not. Also, if Pidge were offeven by a fraction, Keith would surely die.
Keith realized all the variables. He took a deep breath and grabbed onto the poll and rode it down through the chute to the bottom, where the lion shuttle was. Keith got into the shuttle and closed the lid, and away he went into the tunnel that led to Black Lion.
"Come on, everyone!" Pidge shouted. "Let's go watch on the monitor!" Under his breath, Pidge said quietly... "I hope Keith doesn't find it...."
"Find what PidgeO?" Hunk said.
Pidge didn't expect Hunk to overhear him. "Nothing, Hunk. Come on, let's hurry. Keith's about to take off!"
