Midnight's Longing

"Amazing..." Allura says with a contented sigh. "All of the stars...so bright...so beautiful."

It is just after midnight and the young Princess of Arus once again, found that she could not sleep.  She decided to rise from her bed and walk out to a nearby balcony that overlooked the horizon.  She pulls her bathrobe tightly together...the crisp night air sending a slight
chill through her body. But she wanted to be out in the open air... this was her sanctuary.

Leaning over the stone ledge of the balcony, she began to think of the reason why she was out at such a late hour.

The reason for her rise of sleepness nights... was not from the pressures of royal duty, as one might think...but, from her constant thoughts of a young man with mysterious dark eyes and jet black hair...

The man of her dreams... the man she loved, more deeply than she could have ever imagined loving anyone in her lifetime.

Black Lion pilot...Voltron Commander....friend...confidante...whatever she chose to call him....she wanted more than anything tocall him...hers.

With a sigh, Allura looked to the moon...

"Have you ever been in love?" she asked the moon quietly. "Have you ever felt free up there in the heavens, as you cast your reflective light down here on Arus?  Haven't you ever wished, as I do, that you could be free to love?"

Allura closed her eyes... and imagined...love.

What if love were like...

A wihimsical heart... soaring like a shooting star as it sails through the night skies. Alive...full of meaning, as it casts its streaking shadow across the heavens. Everyone sees it...admires it... longs to touch it.

What if love were like...

As sweet smelling as the crisp evening breeze...just after the rain had come and gone? As magical as the lightning in the sky during a thunderstorm...as brisk and awakening as the might wind...touching...flowing and moving freely through long, blond hair, as invisible
fingers would...

What if love were like...

The bright sunlight, warm and tender, shining down upon a crystal clear summer's day. The reflection of its light beams, bouncing off of a crisp lake bottom, shining back, covering the land with warmth.

What if love were like...

The morning dawn...as the sun rose up from its sleeping place, reaching out and gently touching the land...as gentle as a lover's embrace, protectively casting its brilliance over the inhabitants that long for it's appearance.

If love were as simple as all of nature...applauding at the handy work of its Creator for the presentation of yet, another day...another moment...

Allura stared at the night sky...

The night sky...

So wonderous...
So magnificiant...
So brilliant...
So... full of love.

Allura turns her head up...and for a brief moment, catches the stare of someone, looking down from a nearby window that was positionedjust above the balcony that she stood upon.

She smiled contently...

"He's ever watchful." she said quietly to herself.

Keith, Commander of the Voltron Force, somehow has a sixth sense of knowing when his Princess was restless.  He just knows.  Perching himself in the window, he is ever vigilant over her... and for good reason.

Perhaps...it is for love of duty.  Or perhaps...it is for love of her.  But for whatever the reason for his love, however intended...it remains carefully afar.  Committed, but cautious. Silent...but watchful...never forgetting his duty to the Princess.

Or...his silent admiration for her.

He stares down at her from the window... careful to make sure that she is all right.

And she looks up at him, catching his stare...but he does not move. He remains as still as a deer in the wood...never flinching...and never relenting.

Keith looks at her...
And then, reconfirms what his heart has already told him is true...

"This woman holds a power over you." his heart pronounces. "She has mesmerized you... and holds you captive in the snare of her alluring blue eyes.  Her name was given to her, wisely. Allura... meaning, 'alluring one'."

His reason for being there was quite by accident...at first.

He had been restless in his sleep as well.  Always the mother hen, he rose and decided to check on things around the Castle... with his last stop...the Princess's chambers.  Just to make certain that the door was locked.

But when he arrived.... he found that it wasn't. Nor was she in her room.  Refusing to become unnerved over her absence, he suddenly realized that he knew exactly where she had gone...

The old familiar balcony.  A refudge for the weary Princess.

And there, looking over a window from above...he found her standing, looking out over the moonlit horizon.

"She probably can't sleep again." Keith thought to himself. "Understandable as it is... she should try to sleep."

But she was much like himself... stubborn and unmoveable. One of the qualities that attracted him to her.

Keith shifts his position slightly...but continues to keep watch over her from above, like the protective stare of a hawk over her babies.  Only, his protective eye was not mere, motherly instinct...but of sincere love and affection.

He would have never imagined, in his wildest dreams, that his heart would be spirited away...by of all people...a Princess.  That only happens in fairy tales. Not in real life. But... here he was... extending his protective hand over the most beautiful woman that his eyes had ever seen...a fairy tale Princess...and yet...feeling so unworthy of her.

He wasn't a King...
He wasn't a Prince...
He had no royal blood, running through his veins...

And yet... as unworthy of her as he felt...she still wanted...him.

And, perhaps, it was his own feelings of unworthiness that were keeping them apart. Nevertheless...he was her protector...self appointed... righteously, ordained...to a vow of loyalty he made to her...which has gone beyond a mere vow in itself.

He was content to peacefully watch over her from a distance, yet, ready to strike with the venom of a deadly snake, to defend her honor, if necessary...even if it meant doing battle with the devil of hell, itself.

He would defend her...no matter what the circumstance or who the emeny. Her enemies had become his as well.

Allura once again looked up toward her Black Lion Knight....and smiled at him.

Stern was his stare and single nod back to her, as their eyes met...a reply to her affectionate, tender smile. At surface glance, some might mistake it as a crude response...but she knew better.  It was all part of who they were to each other.

She... the people's Princess, endeavoring to protect her world.

He... the ever-present guardian, endeavoring to protect the people's Princess.

That was their way.

And she suspected...it would always be so.  She returned her gaze back toward the moon...while his, remains on her.

The End.
