    Chapter 30
Strained Relations

Lance found him... finally.

Keith was sitting alone on
the observation deck.
The sun was beginning to
set over the horizon.  The
Voltron Commander had his
chair shoved up close to the
window.

And there he sat...alone.

Lance approached, cautiously
at first. He wasn't sure what
kind of reception he'd receive
from his friend.

He suddenly stopped as he heard
Keith's low vocal tone speak
to him...

"What are you doing here, Lance?" Keith asked quietly.

"How'd you know it was me?" Lance smiled, pretending to be innocent.

Keith pointed to the window...

"The reflection." he replied.  "Why are you here?"

"Looking for you." Lance replied back calmly.

"Okay...so you've found me.  Happy?  Now, you can just turn yourself around and head back in the direction that you came from." Keith added sarcastically.

"Its kind of dark in this room," Lance noted.  "Not the kind of place you'd want to sit for hours in."

"I want to be alone, that's why I came here." Keith said.  "So...if you don't mind..."

"Allura thought you might be here." Lance replied as he walked up to stand right behind Keith's chair.

"Allura, huh?" Keith repeated, matter-of-factly.

"Yeah...she was worried about you." Lance said.

Keith snorted sarcastically. "How kind of her.  She's so thoughtful."

"Be nice." Lance replied, with a brief chuckle.

Lance grabbed a chair and pulled it up next to Keith, taking a seat right next to his friend. "So...are you ready to tell me your side?"

"My side of what?" Keith asked, while continuing to stare out the window.

"Of what this is all about...you know...between you and the Princess." Lance replied.

"Why ask me?" Keith groaned out loud.  "Why not ask her?"

"I did." Lance replied back.

"And...what did she say?" Keith asked Lance, still making no move to look at him.

"She said...basically...that the two of you broke up." Lance replied.

"Did she, by chance, tell you WHY we broke up?" Keith asked.

"No...not really." Lance said.  "Why?"

"Well...because I'd sure like to know the answer to that!" Keith grunted.  "I've been mulling over it for hours now and nothing that I can think of seems to fit!  The closest I come to, is that she's
jealous of my attention for Jennica."

"Little Jennica?" Lance chuckled.  "You're kidding, right?"

"Hardly." Keith replied back.

"But...Jennica's a little seven year old!" Lance chuckled.  "What the heck does the Princess got to be jealous of in a little kid?"

Keith merely shrugged his shoulders in reply.

Lance turned his head and looked out of the window, catching the last rays of the setting sun. "You know what I think?"

Keith sighed.  "No...tell me, Lance...what DO you think?  Because its obvious that you're going to tell me anyway!"  Keith's tone was harsh and crass.

"I think this war is getting to you two, and you both just kind of lashed out at each other." Lance replied.

"Oh...you think that's it, huh?" Keith said with a crossed tone.  He then turned his head and looked directly at Lance.  "Then...tell me this, smart guy!  If the war's getting to Allura and to me...then what part of it made her come out with the statement that she doesn't love me anymore?"

"Wha?" Lance said with a puzzled expression.  "She said that?"

"Yeah...she said that! She said she doesn't love me anymore!" Keith shouted.  "Now, you wanna tell me what part of the war motivated that?"

"Whoa...Keith...that'sthat's pretty heavy," Lance said slowly. "Gee...I...I didn't realize..."

"Okay...so now you do, 'realize'!  You also realize that I'm not interested in talking about it, anymore.  I'm more interesting in being alone!  You know...that means...you leave and I stay! I've got to work this out on my own!" Keith growled.  "No offense, Lance, but I don't need your so-called, 'words of wisdom from Lance, the chick-magnet'!  Get my drift?"

"Geez Keith...I...just wanted to help...I..." Lance started to say, but before he could finish the statementthe Castle's klaxons roared to life.

Keith looked up and then at Lance.  He then rose from his chair and looked his concerned friend in the face.

"Alert signal!" Keith said suddenly. "Come on!"

Lance looked up hesitantly at Keith,  "Are you going to be okay with Allura..."

"Next page, Lance!" Keith replied...his face like stone.  "We've got a job to do!"

Lance rose to his feet as he watched Keith dart out of the room.

Lance moved to follow...but was somewhat hesitant...startled by his friend's response.

It was like nothing he had ever seen from Keith before.  He was angry...and maybe worse...he was about to fly angry.

Lance shook his head and dashed after Keith, who was now, half way to the control room.

"I have eleven confirmed attack zones, Princess!" Coran said aloud.

Princess Allura was hovering over Coran's station at Castle Control.  Pidge and Hunk were standing directly behind her.

"What coordinates? And how many attack ships are we talking about?" Allura asked.

"The computer is collecting that information now.  I should have an answer for you in a few moments." Coran replied.

"Have evacuation procedures been initiated?" she asked.

"Yes, Princess." Coran replied.  "All affected regions have begun safety protocols."

Allura stood up straight, turning around to speak to Hunk and Pidge...when she suddenly saw Keith enter the room, with Lance right behind him.

Her heart fluttered with anxiety.

Keith saw her...and for the first time, he felt as if he were a stranger in a strange place.  But there was no time for that now.  He had to put his broken heart aside and prepare for battle.

"Raise the tunnels, Coran!" Keith ordered.  "Feed the coordinates directly to Black Lion's computer system!"

"Are all of the lions going, Commander?" Coran asked, eyeing the Princess suddenly.

"Are all of the lions going?" Lance blurted back.  "What are you talking about, Coran?"

"Commander?" Coran repeated,
biding Keith reply.

Keith looked at Allura...and for a
moment, he was speechless.

Seconds later...

"Yes...all the lions, Coran!" Keith
blurted out, nodding to the
Princess.

Allura jumped off of the platform, readying herself for battle.

With one finger, Coran activated the lion tunnels, which rose up from behind him, lifting the platform into the air.

The five members of the Voltron Force began to run to their lions.

Keith dashed toward his tunnel, and was about to grab onto the T-Bar...when suddenly...

"Keith, wait!"

He turned around, feeling a hand grab onto his left shoulder.  Recognizing the voice, he quickly turned his head to look behind.

"Not now, Princess!" Keith said, rather sharply.

"I...I just want to make sure you're okay." she said, somberly. "Okay to fly, that is..."

"I'll be fine...don't worry about me!  You just worry about flying the Blue Lion!  And for God's sake...do just what you're ordered to do!" Keith replied firmly.  "Now, get to your lion!"

Stunned by his comment, Allura released her grip on his shoulder...and stared at him.  He gazed at her for a moment...

His heart ached for her.  He wanted to sweep her in his arms and run away with her...to talk some kind of sense in to her...

Dispite it all...he still loved her...even if she didn't feel the same.

"Keith?" Allura asked again, seeing the pain in his dark eyes.  "Are you sure you're..."

Then, he turned and grabbed his T-Bar, ignoring the rest of her question.  As he fell out of sight, his voice echoed up to where she stood...

"GET TO YOUR LION, PRINCESS!"

Her heart was broken and her mind, fixated on the impression of his sad, dark eyes...burning through her soul.

She had wronged him...and there wasn't a thing she could do about it.

Not if she wanted him to live.

Without a sound, Allura turned and ran for the number four chute.
