Chapter 14
A Special Goodbye, All Her Own

Green Lion soared through the air,
on its way to Kardel.

Inside the Green Lion cockpit,
Pidge snickered with delight as he
pondered the events that came
about during the last few minutes
before leaving the Castle of Lions.

*****************************************************

It was Hunk's watch in Castle Control.  Pidge entered the room and announced to Hunk to raise up the lion tunnels.  Hunk had questioned Pidge why he needed to do that. Pidge told him that he had received a call from Keith, and that he and the Princess needed a ride back from Kardel.

Hunk turned and looked at Pidge...

"Is he mad?" Hunk asked.

"Not yet." Pidge replied. "But
I'm sure after he sees you and Lance,
you'll be in trouble."

"What can he do to us!" Hunk
proclaimed with a smiling face.

Pidge shrugged his shoulders and then
crossed his arms in front of his chest.
"He's the Commander.  He can make up
punishment, remember?  And Keith's
pretty creative when it comes to
hashing out a plan of action!"

Hunk paused and thought things over for a moment.  "What do you think he'll do?"

Pidge shrugged his shoulders once again.  "I don't know.  But I can say that I'm sure you two are in big trouble!"

"Did he say anything to you about us?" Hunk asked, hoping for a clue as to what Keith was planning.

"Not really. He said he'd talk about it later." Pidge replied.  "But hey, Hunk, can you imagine how you're going to die later?  I have to go get them, so that'll give you something to think about while I'm gone."

Hunk suddenly got lost in thought, causing Pidge to snicker.  "Hunk?  The tunnels...can you raise the tunnels sometime tonight?"

"Huh?  Oh...uh...yeah, the tunnels."
Hunk stumbled.

Hunk watched in nervously as Pidge
ran for the chute to his lion.

Pidge chucked once again as he finished the thought.

"Man, are they in trouble!" Pidge thought. "I hope Keith gives it to them...but good! Serves them right, too!"

Pidge had been following Keith's COM tracking device.  The mini chip, hidden deep within the wrist COM, when activated, could track it's bearer for hundreds of miles.  And right now, it was leading Pidge right to Keith's location.

Green Lion roared loudly as it continued to race across the late afternoon Arusian sky.

The mayor's hover car pulled up to the stable where the horses had been left.  The hover car came to a stop and the hatch lifted up into the air once again.  Keith got out first, then, turning around, he reached his hand out, extending it to the Princess to assist her in
getting out of car.

As Allura stepped out onto the paved ground, she turned back around and leaned her head into the hover car.  Mayor Kuhn smiled and extended his hand toward her, taking her delicate hand into his.

"Thank you, Princess Allura, for allowing me to share my afternoon and our city with you today." Mayor Kuhn said.  Then he released the Princess's hand and reached over to shake Keith's hand.  "And thank you, Commander Keith, for the protection that you provide to Planet Arus."

"My pleasure, Mayor Kuhn." Keith replied.

"Incidentally," Allura added suddenly.  "We will be paying a visit to the children's school sometime next week.  I'm sure that my advisor will inform you of the arrangements made between the school and the Castle."

"That would be wonderful!" Mayor Kuhn replied.  "I will look forward to hearing from you, and to attend your planned visit!"

Suddenly, the sound of Green Lion could be heard...coming from the distance.  Keith extended his hand once again to Mayor Kuhn.

"Thank you again, Sir." Keith said politely.  "It's been a real honor."

"And thank you as well, Mayor Kuhn, for a splendid afternoon and a marvelous tour." Allura added.

"My sincere honor, Princess Allura!" Kuhn replied.

Keith tapped Allura and the shoulder and she backed away from the hovercraft, allowing the hatch to close once again.  The hover car then drove away.

Keith turned to Allura ... "You go and meet Pidge.  I'll get the horses."

"Want some help, Keith?" Allura asked him.

"No, I'll handle it.  You get with Pidge and I'll be right there." Keith said with a smile, reaching up his hand to pat her gently on the shoulder.

She smiled and turned to walk the short distance to the open field near the city limits, where Green Lion was to land.

Keith paused, watching her walk away, and as he caught sight of the Green Lion on final approach and content that Allura was okay on her own, he turned to walk into the stable.

He greeted the stable hand, presenting the young man with money for food and lodging of the horses.

"Oh, by the way," the young man said to Keith.  "You've got a little visitor back there. She's been waiting for you."

"A visitor?" Keith said with a curious tone of voice.  "Who'd be waiting for me, here?"

"A little girl, Commander Keith." the young man replied.  "She's been anxiously waiting in the back.  I let her stay with the horses.  Figured it wouldn't be a problem..."

"No, that's okay." Keith replied.  "Well...better go see who my secret
admirer is."

The young man smiled as Keith walked away from him and headed toward the back of the stable.

Keith could suddenly see a little girl...with brown-blonde hair...

"Jennica?" Keith said suddenly.

The little girl turned around and smiled.  "I've been waiting for you, Commander Keith!" little Jennica replied with a bright smile.

"What are you doing here, all alone?" Keith said, suddenly walking up to her and kneeling down in front of her.  "Your parents must be worried!"

"No, they know I'm here, Commander." Jennica replied simply.  "I don't live very far away, anyhow."

"You still haven't answered my question yet." Keith said with a smile.  "What are you doing here?"

"I knew you had to come back for your horses." Jennica said.  "So, I wanted to talk to you one more time."

"How did you know we had horses?" Keith asked her with a smile.

The little girl shrugged her shoulders.  "I just know."

Keith smirked.  "Someone told you, didn't they?"

"Umm, maybe!" Jennica giggled back.

"Well, what can I do for you, young lady?" Keith asked her, placing his hands upon her small shoulders.

"Nothing much," Jennica replied.  "I...I just wanted to come and say goodbye."

"But, you did say goodbye, Jennie." Keith said to her, still smiling at her.

"I know...but there were too many people around...and...well...I was... I mean...I was hoping to...um...get a hug...just for me...okay?" Jennica stammered, suddenly turning her head downward in a sudden shy manner.

Keith took a deep breath and released it quickly with smile on his face.  "A hug, eh?" Keith replied to her.  "Well, I can certainly understand why didn't want to do that in front of your Mom and Dad."

Little Jennica looked up slowly and a tiny smile crept across her face.

Keith let his hand drop from her shoulders, and instead, extended them forward toward the small child.  Jennica's smile widened and she quickly thrusted her small body into Keith's arms, gripping him tightly, as she threw her arms around his neck, kissing his cheek somewhat impulsively...just as happy as she could be.

Just behind him in the distance stood Pidge and Allura, watching the scene unfold before them.

Allura smiled as she watched Keith coddle the young girl.

"He's sure good with kids." Pidge said quietly.  "Even the little girls fall for him!"

Allura nodded with a sweet smile... glad to see the small child enjoying Keith's company. She hated to bring it up, but time was slipping away, and they had to be going soon.

She cleared her throat loud enough to gain Keith and Jennica's attention.  Keith turned his head and saw Allura and Pidge standing a short distance away.  He nodded to them both, and then he turned back to Jennica.

"I have to go home now, Jennie, and you should too." Keith said to the little girl.

Jennica smiled as she nodded her head.  "You'll come back, right Commander Keith?" she asked him.

"Yes, I'll be back.  Next week, okay?" he replied to her.  "And you can just call me, 'Keith', okay, Jennie?  After all...it's only fair that you can call me, Keith, since I can call you Jennie, right?"

She beamed "Right...Keith!"

Keith nodded.  "Now...you'd better get home."

Jennica leaned in and hugged Keith once more...just a quick one...and then, released him and ran past him.  As she approached the Princess...she stopped suddenly to curtsey to Allura.

"Goodbye, Princess Allura!" Jennica cried.

"I hope to see you again next week, Jennica!" Allura replied.

"Me too!" Jennica replied back, and then turned her head.  "Bye-bye, Keith!"

"See ya, Jennie!" Keith called back to her, still squatting down.

The little girl suddenly turned back to Allura and with one quick smile, she took off running out of the stable.  Keith stood up once again and grabbed the reigns of the horses.  As the led them out of the stable and as he got closer to Pidge and Allura, Pidge couldn't wait to start right in with the teasing...

"Well, she's cute, Keith," Pidge began,  "But she's closer to my age, then to yours!"

"You?" Keith chuckled at Pidge.  "Just what kind of an interest do you have in a seven year old?"

"What interest do you have in her, Keith?" Pidge chuckled.

"I don't, Pidge." Keith said, trying to pretend to be serious, but knowing that Pidge could see right through it.  "She just needed some extra attention, that's all."

"Well, she sure does have an interest in you, that's for sure." Allura said suddenly.

"Aw...she's just a kid, Princess." Keith said, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand.

"Yes, but you're so irresistibly cute, Keith!" Pidge laughed.  "Just ask the Princess!"

Allura turned her head toward Pidge.  Her cheeks were now sporting a light pink blush of embarrassment.

Keith quickly counted...  "Better be careful, Pidge, or you'll end up in the same boat as Lance and Hunk!"

"Speaking of those two," Allura suddenly reminded.

"Yeah, tell me more about what happened today, Pidge." Keith said.  "You mentioned something about, 'blackmailing'.  What's that all about?"

Pidge suddenly frowned.  "Well...you're not going to like it, but you might as well know about it, because you're going to find out sooner or later...especially sooner, after I tell you about Lance and Hunk."

Keith's hand rested on his hips, as he continued to hold the horses' reigns in his hand. "Okay Pidge...out with it."

Pidge sighed quicklyand then took in another deep breath of air...and held it in.

"Well?" Keith said to Pidge.  "Come on!  I'll be an old man before you get this out!"

"Well," Pidge began.  "I...uh...I used the control console's motherboard last week."

Keith's eyes suddenly narrowed. "Pidge?  You did...WHAT?"

"Yeah, I know I'm not supposed to.  I know...but, I only borrowed it to test the new cloaking device I was working on!" Pidge explained.  "I needed more gigs then our regular equipment could handle.  And, although I put it right back...I know that I could have jepordized the Castle's security and defense systems.  Well, Lance and Hunk knew
that I did it...and they knew that you and Coran and the Princess didn't know that I did it. So...the threatened me...saying that if I didn't help them get details on where you and Allura were heading off to...they'd tell on me."

"Oh, Pidge!" Allura blurted out.

"You're right about one thing," Keith said suddenly.  "You knew you weren't supposed to do it! Do you realize how irresponsible..."

"Yeah, yeah...I know the whole lecture, Keith." Pidge groaned.  "It's the one I've been giving myself, on your behalf, all day long!  I should have never done it...and then, Lance and Hunk would have had nothing on me."

Keith sucked in a breath of air, intending on spewing out a reprimand.  But something in Pidge's comment a second ago...about him lecturing himself all day long...made Keith stop before he started.

"Well," Keith said, instead.  "Its seems like you did a more efficient job of discipline then I could ever have done."

"You mean...you're not going to scream at me or something?" the 19-year old teen trembled.

Keith blew out a breath of forced air...and then, shook his head no.  "You know you did wrong.  Why should I go on and tell you the obvious."

"Yes...and I think that the guilt you felt over having been forced to help Lance and Hunk with their plan, has taught you an even greater lesson." Allura added.  "Its taught you honesty."

"But next time, think of a better way to test your gizmos, okay?" Keith also added.  "I don't want to have this conversation with you again."

"Gizmos?" Pidge blurted out.  "Hey, if this thing works like I hope it will...do you realize who much more powerful Voltron will be against Lotor's Doom fleet?"

"Okay...let's stick to the subject." Keith replied.  "Let's get back to Green Lion, and how's about you telling me all about what Lance and Hunk knew.  I have to gather information in order to figure out what to do with those two."

"What are you planning, Keith?" Pidge asked.

"I'm not sure...not just yet," Keith replied.  "But I have some ideas...and its best that you stay out of it."

"You'll get no argument out of me!" Pidge replied with a hearty salute.

"Come on...let's get these horses loaded onto Green Lion and then, lets get back to the Castle...before Coran has a conniption!" Keith said.

The three of them turned and walked out of the stable, with Keith leading the horses.

Soon, they'd be back at the Castle of Lions...and for Pidge, nothing could be sweeter.

Now, he had nothing to hide anymore...and he was free to watch Lance and Hunk squirm, as the thought of Keith's revenge would be enough to taunt his two foolish friends into near insanity.
