Chapter 27
A Sorrowful Farewell

A few hours had gone by as the Voltron Force headed toward the tiny village, where they first found Amy at.

When they arrived, the lions set down within walking distance of Amy's home.  Red Lion was the last to land.

Inside the Red Lion cockpit, Lance took off of his helmet, and placed it beside his chair.  After he had retrieved the Lion key, he turned to Amy, who was sitting quietly in the passenger chair behind him.  They had been making small talk all afternoon during the trip.

She unfastened her safety harness, and stood to her feet.  Lance stood up from his chair, turned and faced her.

"Want some help getting your stuff?" he asked.

Amy smiled gratefully at Lance.  Over the last several hours, he had revealed a part of him that he usually didn't let others see.  She was happy to see that beneath that tough guy attitude, there was a heart that was good as gold.

"Sure... why not?" she replied in answer to his question.

"Okay, I'll be right there.  I just need to shut off my console panel." he said. "Go on ahead!"

Amy nodded her head.  She turned and walked toward the cockpit exit.

On the ground, Keith, Hunk and Pidge were making final flight plans for the trip to Arus.

"That asteroid belt is what's worrying me, Keith." Hunk said. "Blue Lion's still pretty badly banged up.  It might be too hard to get it hrough there."

Keith shook his head. "I know.  But we have no choice.  We have to go this way to get home."

"What about going around it?" Hunk asked.

Pidge shook his head. "Too long.   It would take us a month to get around it and back to Arus. We'd run out of lion energy before we even got close to home."

"Then it's settled." Keith finally said. "We'll all just have to make sure we watch over the Blue Lion in the belt."

At that moment, Amy walked up to Keith, Hunk and Pidge. "I'm going to get my things.  I shouldn't be too long."

Keith nodded, trying to keep his friendliness to a minimum.  His gaze was almost cold toward Amy.   She winced as she felt the chill of his stare.   She turned and walked away, heading in the direction of her soon to be abandoned home.   It was only a short distance from their
present position.

"Hey Amy...want some help?" Pidge called out after her.

"No thanks.  Lance said he'd be along shortly." She called out as she walked.

Hunk piped up, watching Keith give her the cold shoulder.

"Hey, you know, that wasn't very nice, Keith!" Hunk said defensively. "Give her a break, she's having a hard time with this!"

"Hunk, no one knows that more than I do!" he barked back. "Do you think I want to do this?   I hate it!   It's not me!   But I have to do it, to discourage any kind of affection!"

"Yeah, I suppose you're right." Hunk said. "Still, I feel kind of sorry for her."

"She really loved you, Keith." Pidge added. "This has to be killing her."

Keith sighed heavily. "I know...  In a strange sort of way, it's killing me too.  I'm sorry it had to be this way."

They became silent for moment.  Pidge finally cut through the silence. "I'm going to catch up to her... see if she needs some help."

"But Pidge, she said Lance was going to help her!" Hunk said.

"I know...but Lance isn't down from his lion yet, and I'm anxious to get home!  The faster we get her stuff, the faster we get home to Arus!" Pidge replied, looking to Keith for his approval to go.

Keith nodded his head slightly, his heart heavy all of a sudden.  Pidge nodded to Hunk, and Hunk nodded back.  Then, Pidge turned on one heal, and ran for toward Amy's home.

Lance was walking up to Keith and Hunk as Pidge headed down the dirty path to find Amy.

"Hey, where's Pidge off to?" Lance asked.

"He went to help Amy get her stuff, so we can start for home." Hunk said.

"Yeah, I'm heading that way myself." Lance added.  He looked at Keith. "You coming?"

Keith shook his head no.

Lance stared at him. "You know, Keith, I think I've got her to accept the idea that returning to Earth won't be so bad after all."

Keith looked up to Lance. "How'd you manage that?" he asked curiously.

"I just told her that she'd find some other dashing young man, who's a lot smarter than you are!" he teased.

"Very funny, Lance!" Keith smirked. "I suppose that did the trick..."

"Sure it did!" Lance chuckled. "After all, who wants to hang out with a low-life, loser, no fun guy like you?"

"Who you calling a 'loser'?" Keith defended with a smile.

"You!  I'm calling you a loser...loser!"  Lance then immediately lunged at Keith, catching him off guard, and throwing him to the ground, then pouncing on top of him.

Keith struggled to get up, but Lance had him pinned down.

"Get off me!" Keith shouted

"Nothing doing, Commander Stuffy!" Lance chuckled as he pinned Keith to the dirt ground. "You've been asking for this for a long time!  And I'm just the guy to give it to you!"

"I'm warning you, Lance!" Keith shouted at his second. "When you get up, I'll..."

KA-BOOM!!!!!!

Lance and Keith stopped struggling suddenly, hearing the earth shaking explosion.  The blood rushed out of Hunk's face, suddenly.   Lance immediately came to his feet, pulling Keith up with him.

"An explosion!  That's where Amy and Pidge are!" Hunk shouted.

"COME ON!" Keith shouted, breaking into a full sprint down the path, followed by Lance and Hunk.

Allura came carefully out of Blue Lion, hearing the mighty explosion from inside.

"What was that horrible explosion?" she frantically thought, as she watched Keith, Lance and Hunk run full speed toward Amy's village.

She decided to follow as quickly as she could.

Mass hysteria had reached epidemic proportions as Keith, Lance and Hunk reached the village.

The poor villagers were running everywhere, not sure what had happened, but afraid that they were under some sort of attack.  No one bothered to stop and see if someone had been hurt by the blast.

"What was that?" Hunk shouted as they ran, referring to the explosion.

"Lotor?" Lance asked aloud.

As they approached Amy's house, Keith stopped everyone dead in their tracks.

"Oh no!" he muttered in disbelief.

Lance gasped, and Hunk stood in shock.  Before them, was what was left of Amy's house, blown to smithereens, and now fully engulfed in flames.

"Spread out!  Find Pidge and Amy!" Keith commanded at once.

Lance and Hunk darted out in two different directions, while Keith headed toward the burning house.

"AMY!  PIDGE!" Hunk and Lance cried out.

Keith approached the house, but it was too hot to get close enough to see if anyone was in there.

He balled his fists together,
looking up to the sky with anger in his eyes.

"Lotor" he quietly hissed.
"Your name is written all over this!"

"KEITH!"

He looked up toward the direction of his name.  He could see Allura coming.  Quickly, Keith took a defensive position, holding out his left hand to her, signaling her to stop where she was.

"DON'T COME ANY CLOSER,
PRINCESS!  RETURN TO
THE BLUE LION!" Keith
shouted.

The last thing he needed
was to have to worry about her too.

"KEITH... LET ME GET BLUE LION!
WE CAN USE THE WATER TO PUT OUT THE
FIRE..."

"NO ALLURA!" Keith shouted to her. "GET BACK TO THE LION AND STAY THERE, WHERE YOU'LL BE SAFE!"

"BUT...KEITH," Allura's echoed voice protested once again.

"PRINCESS...I'M GIVING YOU AN ORDER!  GET BACK!" Keith shouted, staring her down from he distance.

If Lotor were around, she'd be an easy target with all of them scattered around, in search of Pidge and Amy.  Keith surmised that the Princess would be safer back in the lion, where she could defend herself, if she needed to.

Allura began to slowly back away from the area, turning and then heading back toward camp.

Seeing that Allura was moving away, he turned back toward the house, beginning to frantically call out for Amy and Pidge...

"AMY!  PIDGE!  ANSWER ME!" he shouted, beginning a ground search. "CAN YOU HEAR ME?"

Lance was moving toward the brush, when he heard a faint whine.  He quickly ran over to it. His mouth dropped to the ground.  Pidge was lying flat on his back, his face and hands were burned and his cloths soiled from the blast.  Lance immediately ran over to him, dropping
quickly to his knees.

"Pidge!  Pidge!  Wake up, buddy!" Lance pleaded. "Pidge!  Come on!"

He opened his COM to Hunk and Keith. "I found Pidge!" he shouted into it.

Hunk immediately responded. "Is he alright?"

"I think so." Lance said, cradling Pidge's head on his lap. "Keep looking for Amy!  She has be somewhere close by!"

Keith never responded.  Lance could only hope that he got the message.

Keith continued his frantic search for Amy and Pidge.

He, in fact, did not hear the message that Pidge had been found.  At the time Lance had called, Keith was busy making sure that Allura didn't attempt to approach the nasty scene.

His shouts to the Princess had drowned out the conversation over his COM link.

He started to search the surrounding area around the burning house.  It was then that he caught a glimpse of what looked like a body, flung onto a bunch of bushes.   He immediately ran over toward it.   As he got closer, his heart began to pound in his chest, and the almost
hideous sight made him freeze.

He gasped out loud, impulsively.

The body was badly burned, almost beyond recognition.  It was then that he knew it was Amy.  Her hair was scorched...almost gone.  Her clothes were charred, along with the rest of her body.

Keith tried to shake himself into moving toward her.

"AMY!" he screamed suddenly. "NO! AMY!"

He finally found the strength within himself to run toward her.

He bent down next to Amy, almost afraid to touch what was left of her.  He gently lifted her off of the bushes, and set her on the ground, cradling her in his arms.  He check her, pulse, she was still breathing...barely.

"Amy...Amy... no." he tearfully pleaded, rocking her back and forth in his arms. "You can't leave... not like this..."

Suddenly, he heard her gasping for air, and she began to cough uncontrollably.

"Amy!" he pleaded. "It's me... Keith!

Suddenly, she opened her eyes, and looked up at him.  She smiled weakly at him.

"Keith...what... happened?" Her voice was raspy and weak.

"Don't you remember?" he asked her.

"My... house," she stuttered, going into shock. "I... I think... no...wait...I opened the door, and ...there...was a loud... bang..."

"I know.  You were thrown clear of it.  I've got you now." Keith said, trying to cheer her up.

"I'm... cold... Keith." she said, as she began to shiver. "I'm so... c-c-cold."

Keith looked down at her.  It was all he could do to keep it together for her sake.  He knew she was going to die, that was a foregone conclusion.  She had burns over nearly 80 percent of her body and she was going into severe shock.

"I know..." Keith tried to comfort her, realizing that nothing he would do could help her now. "Just try to relax."

Amy stared up at him. "Your face...  Something's wrong... isn't it?"

"No...no... I'm alright." He said.  "Just relax.  I've found you!  Its okay now...everything's okay now...."

"I...I can't...feel my...my body..." she heaved suddenly.

"Sh-h-h," Keith replied in a soothing voice, desperately trying to hold back the tears. "It's going to be alright."

"Keith..." she coughed.

He drew a deep breath. "Yes, Amy?"

She began gasping for breath. "Tell me..."

"Anything, Amy!  Whatever you want!" He said, tears starting to form in his eyes.

"Tell me...that you... love me." She gasped.

Keith sucked in a deep breath. There was no point in fighting now.  She was taking her final breaths of life. "Yes, Amy.  I... I do love you." He finally said to her.

She smiled at him. "See...I knew...you...did..." Her voice began to fade off.  Then, her body convulsed as the final breath of air escaped her body.

Keith held her as she slipped away from this life.  The tears began to freely flow now, turning into sobs of both anger and anguish.

"Amy...Amy...can you hear me?"
he said to her...but she was already dead.

It was then that Keith looked up,
and saw Allura standing there,
tears rolling down her cheeks.
He looked at her, his mouth open,
but no sound was coming out.

Allura wept as she looked at Amy.
"Is... is she dead?"

Keith hesitated for a moment...
then nodded his head slightly.
Allura crumpled to the ground, grief-stricken.
She wept in sorrow and anger, realizing that
Lotor had succeeded in destroying
yet another innocent life.

Keith hadn't the strength to get up and go to her.
He just sat there, holding Amy's lifeless body.

A feeling of numbness came over him.

He returned his gaze back to Amy, recalling his final words to her.  As silly as it seemed, he was glad she took that feeling of happiness with her when she left this life.  He took some comfort in knowing that he had made things right between them for all of eternity.

Amy...I do love you...my friend.
I never meant to hurt you and I'll never forget you.
Goodbye, Amy.
Sleep well.
