Chapter 10
False Feelings

Hunk ran to find Lance and Pidge, who were still in the same place they were when Keith had left them.  Hunk ran over toward them, tripping over ground clutter.  Lance looked up and laughed at Hunk's less-than-graceful moves.

"Well, Hunk.  A dancer you are not!" he giggled.  "What are you trying to prove?  Showing us just how..."

Hunk immediately cut off Lance.  "Never mind that!  Come one!  Keith's in trouble!"

Lance and Pidge stopped what they were doing.  "What's wrong?"  Pidge quickly asked.

Hunk was still trying to catch his breath.  "Keith... is in the forest. With Amy!"

Lance glared at him.  "So?  Why should that mean he's in trouble?"

"Yeah, he's probably giving her what for again!"  Pidge waved his arms at Hunk.

Hunk rubbed his head with his hand.  "Well, if giving her what for includes making out with her on the forest ground, then I might agree with you but...I don't think that's the case here!"

Lance and Pidge turned quickly around and shouted at the same time,  "WHAT!"

Lance then waved his hands in the air. "Wait a minute, wait a minute!  Hunk, are you sure this is what you saw?  Are you sure you didn't fall asleep somewhere and dreamed what you thought you saw?"

Hunk shook his head violently.  "Not unless I imagined that Keith drew his blaster on me, and threatened to kill me on the spot, if I didn't turn tail and leave!"

"WHAT!  He did WHAT?"  Pidge cried.  He looked at Lance. "This is bad!  We better take a look at this!"

"Yeah, but be quiet about it.  Allura's in her tent sleeping.  I don't want to alarm her!"  Lance said.  Then he turned to Hunk.  "Okay, big guy.  Lead the way to Keith!"

When they reached the forest where Hunk saw them, they were no longer there.  Lance and Pidge looked at Hunk, who was shaking his head.  "Guys!  I know what I saw!"

Pidge rubbed his chin... "Maybe they went back to her house."

"Uh oh..." Lance added.  "Come on.  We had better get over there, fast!"

Lance, Hunk, and Pidge started running through the forest until they reached Amy's house.  The door was closed.  Pidge looked into the front window and what he saw confirmed Hunk's story.

Keith was in a lip embrace with Amy... and the two of them were slumped over on her living room couch.

Pidge ran over to Lance and quietly reported what he saw.

Lance looked at him, his eyes wide.  "I can't believe this!"

Hunk put his hands on his hips.  "See!  I told you so!  Now what?"

"Come on!"  Lance shouted.  He started banging on the door.  "Amy!  Amy you come out here...right now!"

The door opened slowly, revealing Amy standing in front of them, with Keith behind her, mindlessly kissing the back of her neck.

She smiled at Lance.  "Oh, hi boys!"  She said.  "If you're looking for Keith. He's a bit preoccupied right now!" she giggled sweetly.  "So come back later, okay?"  She started to close the door.

Lance jolted his foot in the doorway, halting the closing door.  "Okay, Amy!  What have you done to him?  Why's he acting like this?" Lance demanded.

She shook her head.  "I didn't do anything to him.  This is his idea!"

Pidge jumped in front of Lance.  "Keith...Keith what are you doing?  Why are you with with her?"

Keith stopped kissing Amy's neck and regarded his small friend.  "Why do you care.... Shorty?"

Pidge's eyes grew as big as baseballs... "Why do I care, Shorty?  'Shorty?' Are you kidding?  This isn't you!  I thought you were going to put an end to this!  What will the Princess think?"

Keith rolled his eyes.  "Look, a guy's entitled to change his mind!  I'm in love with Amy, not Allura or anyone else!  I realize that now!  And as for Allura and what she thinks, who cares!  One of you guys can look after her for awhile.  She's high maintenance... always getting into trouble... always needing to be rescued from some predicament she manages to get herself into!  I'm just tired of risking my life to save her pretty neck!  And now that you mention it, I'm tired of you guys bugging me too!"

He pulled Amy in toward him, and grabbed the door.  "If you guys will excuse me, I'm doing some catch up time here.  So beat it!"  And then he slammed the door in their faces.

The three men just looked at each other.  Pidge finally spoke up first.  "High maintenance?  Allura?  Is he kidding?  Who was this guy we just saw?  Not our Keith!  How could he say that about Allura...especially after we all pretty much know how he feels about her!"

"Something's not right with him!" Hunk said, rubbing the back of his head with his hand.  "Someone did something to him to make him act this way!"

Lance agreed.  "Sure someone did!  Before he walked away, he had it in his mind to tell her to leave him alone, once and for all.  Now this!"

Pidge crossed his arms.  The sudden thought of the Princess came to his mind, and starting ripping him apart inside.  "We have to tell Princess, guys.  She's got to know what's going on."  Pidge said regretfully.

"She's going to flip out!"  Hunk shouted.

"Worse than that, I'm afraid." Lance sighed, not wishing to be the one to tell her.  "This is going to crush her.  She's going to fall over with this news..."

"Well, aren't we all?"  Pidge added.  "He's not even acting 'Keith like' at all!  It's like... his military discipline took a backseat!  And for Amy, of all people!"

"Yeah!  And do you believe what he said about the Princess?  She's got to be the sweetest person I've ever known!" Hunk shouted angrily.  "It makes me want to rip his throat out and tie it around his neck!"

Pidge grabbed onto Hunk's balled fist.  "Easy, Hunkster!" Pidge soothed.  "Just take it easy!"

Lance shook his head.  "Come on, guys.  Until we find out what happened to him, we need to make Allura aware.  We have to be strong... for her sake."

"Yeah, especially when we tell her what he said about her!'  Hunk added, referring to Keith's earlier comments.  "I could just pound his head in!"

Lance turned and pointed his finger to Hunk and Pidge.  "And that's why I know this isn't Keith!  He'd never say that about the Princess!"  He shuffled his feet in the dirt.  "Just the same, let's not mention the part about 'high maintenance' to her, okay?"

Pidge and Hunk agreed.

Lance turned around and headed for their camp, to break the news to Allura.  Hunk and Pidge followed right behind.

"Poor Allura..." Lance thought. "What is she going to think?  There's got to be some way I can make this easier for her!"

He realized that there was nothing he could do to soften the blow.  He just needed to tell her, and be there to catch her when she falls. something that Keith should be doing instead of him.
